8 Things You Need to Know About Reiki - from a Reiki Master
Hello love,
In this love letter I am going to go over some things you should know about Reiki and also some common questions I get asked. As a Reiki master teacher who has been channeling Reiki for 20+ years, the first thing I’d like everyone to know is you are your own healer! I will also go over some basics like what Reiki is and how it works and what to expect from a session. Before we get to the 8 things to know, lets just touch on the #1 question, What is Reiki?
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an alternative healing technique that promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being through the channeling of universal life energy. Rei is Japanese for “universal life” and Ki meaning “energy”. When this energy is low or blocked, it can lead to imbalance and illness. During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels the energy through their body and then connects it to the intended recipient. This is either by gently placing their hands on or near the client’s body or through connecting in the quantum field through distance Reiki.
Transferring this healing energy helps to clear blockages, reduce stress, and stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki supports relaxation, enhances mental clarity, and fosters deep inner peace, aligning the mind, body, and spirit. Best of all it is non-invasive and deeply relaxing.
You are your own healer
Often we project our healing onto things, experiences, and people outside of ourselves. In reality, you are the healer. Everything and everyone is a reflection. So when you decide to have a Reiki healing session, the Reiki healer is the vessel.
This energy healer has been attuned, through a sacred ritual, to open up chakras which allows divine (universal, life force, love, or whatever word you wish to use) energy to be transmitted to you. You are the one who will have to be open to receiving the level of healing that is right for you at the time. Don’t worry, your openness to booking the appointment and showing up, mean you are already ready, even if you are skeptical. This really comes down to a process with your soul.
2. What a Reiki session is like
During a session you may feel the energy as tingling, heat, coolness, throbbing, lightness, heaviness, or other sensations. These are usually very good feelings. On a few occasions when a client had an uncomfortable feeling, right when they were about to tell me, it lifted and the feeling was very freeing. If any discomfort arrises, it will release. You will only experience what you are ready to. Some of these may be intellectual understandings. I have even had clients experience past lives in their sessions.
Bonus: What should I wear or bring with me?
Wear comfortable clothing. If you get cold easily, you may want to layer up. You may bring a pen and paper if you wish for after your session. A bottle of water incase you get thirsty.
3. How will I feel after?
Everyone’s experience is different, but in general you will feel relaxed and peaceful. In the next several hours while changes continue to integrate, you should honor your intuition. Some sessions you may feel energized after a session. In others you may need to go to bed early. Most people have a really goodnight’s sleep after a session.
4. Is Reiki religious?
This healing energy has no religious affiliations. It is universal life force energy that is not limited or influence by religious constructs. Anyone can receive Reiki regardless of religion or beliefs.
5. Energy work is safe
I often get asked if it is safe. Yes, it is noninvasive and safe for everyone when done through a certified practitioner or master. I do not send it to someone under anesthesia. There are mixed thoughts about this in the community, but to be safe it can be sent before and after surgery.
6. What to do after a session
drink plenty of water
avoid alcohol
connect with nature
reflect on how you feel
listen to your body (you may want to go to sleep early or take a bath)
my favorite post energy work suggestion, have some chocolate (it’s grounding).
7. How often to book a session
Come back for another session when you feel called to. There are no rules for spiritual healing and you know yourself better than anyone else, so listen to yourself. Some people come weekly for a while, some once a month, some once a year. Your body and mind will let you know when it is time for another session. Trust yourself.
8. Distance Reiki really does work!
Distance healing sessions use an advanced Reiki symbol that allows the channeled energy to be sent across time and space. Much like radio waves, frequencies can travel anywhere they are directed. Energy travels not only through space, but also time. It can be sent to the past or future, here in the present, as well as to anyone/thing in the universe.
